I have always felt a strong attraction towards fashion photography. I am a helpless cinema lover, and I have the conviction that a fashion shooting is the timeless version of a movie. It is easy to create a background escenario and place your character in it. That character, the way is dressed, the environment itself, and how the character interacts with that environment shares the same very basic storytelling power as the dialogue lines in a movie.
There is also a big difference on how you approach a fashion shooting, compared on how you shoot, for example, street photography. While on street photography you try to capture a moment without altering the scene or the moment, as an observer, in fashion photography you can modify the environment and light to look as you want. At the contrary to street photography, almost every time everything happens in seconds, you can really take your time to find the perfect shot in model photography.
Used to shoot street photography, where you don’t really have to interact with the people, makes working with a model a challenging but at the same very grateful experience..
For this fashion shooting we went to Huaguang Community in Taipei, an old neighbourhood built during the 50s to host families who had fled from China to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War. Huaguang community was already abandoned when we shoot there, and it was demolished few months after. These photographies are a testimony of the last days of a place who held happiness and sadness, dreams and hopes of many newcomers to Taiwan. Check this article to know more on the history of Huaguang community.
The purpose of this shooting was to put in practice what I had learned from Craig about illumination. It was a great experience to play with lights in a non-studio environment. It was also the first time I worked with Amber and she was extremely patient and helpful, making the shooting a wonderful time.
Have you ever take any fashion shooting session before? It is a very fun experience, and I will be shooting more of these if I can!
